Naturalist Kim White talks about women who have made significant contributions to our understanding of the natural world from Queen Hatshepsut (1478 BCE), to Jane Goodall (present). Signup required.
Throughout history, women have made significant observations that have changed our understanding of the natural world. Naturalist and educator Kim White introduces us to these remarkable women.
From Queen Hatshepsut's botanical collections (1478-1458 B.C.E), to paleontologist Mary Anning (1799-1847), to biologist Rachel Carson (1907-1964), to Jane Goodall (present). Many women who were proficient in a scientific or natural history discipline were informally educated or self-taught. They were rarely given the credit they deserved during their lifetime and many have never been fully recognized. Kim's research and lifelong interest in the natural world has led her to develop this special program. Signup required.
Speaker bio: Naturalist and educator Kim White
"While working at Brookfield Zoo, I came upon a field guide published in 1893. The descriptions were poetry, and I desired to know more about the woman that wrote it. I then began to wonder about other women that have made significant contributions to our understanding of the natural world. In my search, I found a number of amazing women, going as far back as Egypt’s Queen Hatshepsut to the present with recently passed Jane Goodall. Join me as I introduce you to women that have changed how we view our world, and have changed my life."
